How To Make A Cheap And Hearty Lasagna

If you need a break from takeaways or want to cook for your flatmates without breaking the bank, a cheap, hearty lasagna is for you.

Ingredients:

  • 1 onion

  • 2 carrots

  • 1 jar of red lasagne sauce or chopped tomatoes

  • 1 jar of white lasagne sauce

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • 500g of mince meat

  • 500ml of beef stock

  • 8-12 Lasagne sheets

  • Salt and pepper

  • Small amount of grated cheese (optional)

  • 4 tbs of cooking oil

Cost: £4.84 or £1.21 per person (with mince left over for another meal)

  1. Peel carrots and grate (or chop) finely.

  2. Peel onion and chop finely.

  3. Chop both cloves of garlic finely.

  4. Add 2 tbs of oil to a pan and put on a medium heat. Once hot add veg and leave to cook.

  5. While veg is cooking, heat another 2tbs of oil in another pan. Add half of the mince to the pan and leave to brown. Try not to move the mince too much as it’ll brown more quickly.

  6. Add cooked mince to the veg and repeat the last step with the rest of the mince.

  7. Turn up to a high heat and add beef stock and red lasagne sauce. Mix well then leave the sauce to boil.

  8. Once boiled, turn the heat down and leave to simmer for at least 10 minutes. The longer you leave it to boil the ticker the sauce will be, so try to leave it for up to 45 minutes.

  9. Once you’ve left it to simmer, take your mince off the heat and leave to cool.

  10. Take your dish and add a thin layer of white sauce to the bottom.

  11. Add a layer of pasta sheets, don’t worry about breaking them to fit.

  12. Take your mince and spread evenly.

  13. Add another layer of pasta sheets and repeat.

  14. If you have any room left in your dish you can add another layer by repeating the last two steps, if not, move onto the next step.

  15. Add a final layer of pasta sheets, then top with the rest of your white sauce.

  16. Now put in the oven at 190c for 25-35 minutes until golden brown.

  17. Once cooked, you can grate some cheese on top if you’d like to finish it off.

  18. Serve and enjoy.

  19. If you have any left over mince, simply freeze and enjoy as spaghetti Bolognese, another lasagne or even stick it between two pieces of bread.
